As the summer heat sets in, there's nothing quite as refreshing as a cool, wobbly bite of jello. But did you know that making your jello at home can be a healthy treat with benefits? This simple homemade jello recipe uses natural juice and unflavored beef gelatin, offering a nutritious alternative to store-bought versions loaded with artificial colors and sugars.
Ingredients: What you will need
4 cups of juice (choose your favorite, such as apple, grape, or a mix of citrus juices)
2 tablespoons unflavored beef gelatin (such as Further Foods (code wellnesshomemade to use my affiliate link) Grass-Fed Gelatin. Do NOT use collagen or protein powder.)
2 tablespoons honey (optional for added sweetness but I don't use this)
Molds of choice- You can find a ton of options on Amazon that fit your size needs.
Instructions:
Prepare the Juice: Pour 3 cups of juice into a medium saucepan.
Bloom the Gelatin: In a separate bowl, pour the remaining 1 cup of juice and sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of unflavored beef gelatin. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to "bloom." This step ensures the gelatin will dissolve smoothly without clumps.
Heat the Juice: Slowly heat the 3 cups of juice in the saucepan over medium heat until it starts to steam, but do not let it boil.
Combine and Dissolve: Once the juice is steaming, add the bloomed gelatin mixture to the saucepan. Stir continuously until the gelatin is completely dissolved, which may take a few minutes. If you're using honey or agave for added sweetness, stir until it is fully dissolved.
Pour and Set: Pour the mixture into a glass or silicone mold and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer to the refrigerator and allow it to set for at least 4 hours or until firm.
Enjoy: Once set, cut the jello into fun shapes or scoop it out with a spoon. Enjoy your healthy, homemade treat!
Why Homemade Jello is a Healthy Option:
1. Benefits of Gelatin: Gelatin, derived from collagen, is a protein with several health benefits. It's known for its positive impact on gut health, as it can help protect the gut lining and improve digestion. Gelatin is also rich in amino acids, particularly glycine, which supports overall gut integrity and can aid in reducing inflammation.
2. Nutrient-Rich: Using 100% natural juice, your homemade jello is free from artificial additives and contains vitamins and minerals. For instance, juices like orange or cranberry are high in vitamin C, while grape juice offers a good dose of antioxidants.
3. Supports Skin, Hair, and Nail Health: Regular consumption of gelatin can help improve the health and appearance of your skin, hair, and nails. Collagen, the primary component of gelatin, is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and strength, making this treat a beauty booster.
4. Joint Health: Gelatin can also support joint health. Its collagen helps maintain the integrity of cartilage, the rubbery tissue that cushions joints. This can particularly benefit active individuals or those looking to improve their joint function.
5. Low in Sugar: Unlike commercial jello, which is often laden with refined sugars, this homemade version uses natural sweeteners like honey or agave, and you can adjust the sweetness to your preference or even omit it entirely.
Notes:
Choosing Your Juice: Opt for 100% natural juice without added sugars or preservatives. Freshly squeezed juice is even better for maximum health benefits.
Gelatin Source: Ensure you use high-quality, unflavored beef gelatin. Collagen or protein powders will not set the same way and won't yield the desired jello texture.
Making your jello is a delicious treat that's refreshing and packed with health benefits. This simple recipe is a great way to incorporate more gelatin into your diet, supporting your gut, skin, and joint health while keeping your summer snacking tasty and nutritious. Enjoy!
