Creating a Low-Tox Fall at Home

Fall has always been my favorite season, long before it became trendy. I’m the person who gets giddy at the first leaf that turns orange and counts down to September 22 like it’s a holiday. My kids actually learned that date before they even knew when Christmas was. There’s something about the cooler mornings, cozy sweaters, and the way the air feels fresh and new that makes me feel alive.
As much as I love fall, I’ve also learned it is a season where toxins can quietly creep in. We keep our windows open less, the house gets sealed up tight, and suddenly the air inside can actually be more polluted than the air outside. Add in candles, cleaners, and seasonal sprays, and it can quickly feel less cozy and more chemical.
Here’s how I’ve made our home a little healthier while still keeping all the fall vibes my family loves.
The Candle Struggle
Finding better-for-you candles is not always easy. I love having a candle burning in the evenings, and my husband insists the house must smell good. But most candles are made with paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances that release toxins as they burn. A few of my favorite alternatives are:
Farm Girl Candle Co. for their seasonal scents and clean ingredients (you can use code TASHA15 to save)
Meaningful Mantras Candles, which are safer and come with uplifting messages
Simmer pots with sliced apples, cinnamon sticks, and cloves for a natural fall scent

Staying Hydrated
Cooler weather tricks us into thinking we do not need as much water, but our bodies still do. A few ways I keep hydration simple and enjoyable are:
Use a cup or tumbler that feels fun to drink from (seasonal colors or a large insulated cup help)
Add lemon, apple slices, or even a cinnamon stick to your water for a fall-inspired flavor
Sip on warm herbal teas, which count toward hydration and feel cozy during chilly days
Cleaning Up the Air
Since the windows stay closed more often, air quality inside matters even more. We’ve used a few options that made a big difference:
PuroAir 240 HEPA Air Purifier for Home Large Rooms – a great starter purifier that worked really well for us
Air Doctor – what we upgraded to later, and I noticed an even bigger difference in air quality
Houseplants like peace lilies or snake plants, which naturally filter the air
Fresh air breaks – opening windows for even ten minutes on a mild day helps clear out stale indoor air
Everyday Products
You all know I keep it real, so I’d be lying if I said I never use “toxic” chemicals in my house. I follow the same 80/20 rule here that I do with food. About 80 percent of the time we use clean products, and 20 percent of the time we use the regular stuff. Every so often the bottom of the shower just needs some Comet because my husband somehow knows how to turn the shower floor black. So yes, most of the time we stick with safer options, but when we don’t… well, that’s what the air purifiers are for, right?
A few of my favorite low-tox brands are:
Truly Free – my go-to for both laundry and cleaning products
Pronounce Skincare & Apothecary – clean, small-batch products with safe ingredients
Branch Basics – concentrated cleaner that works for just about everything
Blueland – refillable and eco-friendly cleaning products that help cut down on waste
Bringing Nature Inside
Nothing beats the real thing. A bowl of pinecones, a vase of fall branches, or even some fresh herbs in the kitchen can make the house feel seasonal and cozy. It’s simple, natural, and feels good.
The Cozy Conclusion
A low-tox fall is not about perfection. It’s about creating small, intentional shifts that keep your home cozy and inviting while also protecting your health. When you pair seasonal traditions with simple swaps, you get the best of both worlds: all the cozy fall feels and a cleaner, healthier home.
